In R4:
This has been a very busy month in R4. Quite a few of us attended Convolution in Burlingame and survived a trip to the Black Hole (actually a fundraiser by your local friendly Klingons smile emoticon ). It was a very peaceful shore leave for crews from three major fleets in the area (STARFLEET, Klingon Imperial Fleet / KAG and The Royal Manticoran Navy). I am happy to report none of us came out the worse for wear, compare to the scene from “The Trouble with Tribbles”.

Don’t miss the chance to meet the awesome folks around R4 (and beyond)! This year’s R4 Conference will take place next month. This is the info in case you haven’t signed up yet:

From ECAB:
We received some update from VCS RADM Hayden Segel. According to Hayden, on the SFMC side, the Commandant got with his subordinate leaders and took action. All marks, emblems, words, and phrases identified to us by the USMC Trademark Office have been removed.

On the Fleet side, he spoke directly with Mr. Greene (USMC Trademark Office) and briefed him on what we did to gain compliance. In turn, Mr. Greene assured Hayden no further action will be taken on behalf of the US Government.

Hayden recommends all SFMC members to try to be as original as possible when developing logos, mottos, etc. He would also extend this recommendation to all SFI members.

if anyone has questions regarding this matter, please don’t hesitate to contact me (rc [at] region4 [dot] org) or Hayden (vcs [at] sfi [dot] org).

Besides the SFMC logo issue, the hot topics are the continued viability of printed Communique, as well as proposed changes to eligibiity of Honorary / Lifetime memberships. The AB will meet on 10/24 to discuss these. I’ve asked the CO’s of our chapters to cascade this info. If you would like to receive a copy of these proposals please drop me a line at rc [at] region4 [dot] org or message me via FB.

Both of these are “hot topics” for different reasons. For decades, the Communique has been the cornerstone of STARFLEET: The International Star Trek Fan Association. It’s obviously hard to give up something like that. However, STARFLEET is not immune to the challenges to most printed publications, namely the general preference toward electronic publishing and rising cost of printing (not to mention the toll on the all-volunteer staff in our case). Thankfully, several high profile fleet members have stepped up and offered to find ways to preserve the cherished tradition of Communique. Hats off to VADM Jon Lane & RADM Liz Woolf of USS Angeles and others like them. I hope we can find a way to meet this challenge and come out a better organization.

Regarding the proposed changes on qualifications for Honorary and Lifetime memberships: This was intended to expand the eligibility pool and codify certain actions within AB’s authority. Now, a number of folks have argued why change things that work. So these proposed changes will probably be tabled.

Speaking of challenges, Chief of Communications, COMM Michael Garcia announced his intention to step down after 11/1/15. So we are actively seeking a new Chief of Communications at this time. Interested parties should assemble a team including Vice Chief and Associate Vice Chief. So it’s a bit tricky – you are welcome, in fact expected to hire your own senior staff on day one. Please send your applications to comms [at] sfi [dot] org and cs [at] sfi [dot] org no later than 11/12/15.
